What's the deal with the blurring line?

Sometimes, what I read seems so real that I'm not always sure it didn't really happen!
 For example, I am quite certain that Marcellus really never was the same after The Robe.

Boston 18 - USS Constitution

Last on our list of tourist attractions, we went to see the USS Constitution. I think my dad would have really enjoyed this. The ship is nicknamed "Old Ironsides," not because it has any iron in it, but because she withstood so much in battle.
