Boston Common is 44 acres of open land, orginally a cattle pasture land for early Bostonians. Later,it was a militia training ground and a British army camp when they occupied Boston. It has been the site of hangings, stocks, and public oratory, including Martin Luther King Jr and Pope John Paul II.
Right next to the Common is the "new"
State House.(Yes, there is still an old State House!) The dome was originally wood, later covered with copper by Paul Revere (to prevent leaks) and in 1874, with gold.
We saw an interesting monument depicting Robert Gould Shaw and his regiment of African American soldiers who served in the Civil War.

King's Chapel, built in 1688 because there was no Anglican church in this Puritan colony (the very church they left England to escape!) It looks a little funny, because the steeple was never added because of cost.

looks like so much fun! you guys are seeing so much interesting stuff- i sure hope dad loves the marathon enough to do it again next year!
